This is a 1:56min sports video. Although it seems short, it has 104 clips. It showcases preparation for the NFL scouting combine. As a former athlete, I appreciate the high level of training and the athletes’ dedication. So how does one create a sports highlight video?

Pre production:
– Prepare: learn about the sport
– Pick up the right gear
– Be physically prepared to run

Production:
– Warmup before the shoot (not a joke). You’ll be doing physical activity
– Have several cameras
– Shoot from different angles
– Shoot at a high frame rate
– Move with athletes
– Shoot some long clips that you could creatively use later
– Have different focal length lenses
– Catch some genuine in-between-training moments, interaction between athletes and coaches
– Get up close, but don’t be in the way

Post production:
– Know your footage – make notes – sort
– Choose the right music. Very important
– Follow the 3-act structure
– Vary the length of shots according to music
– Adjust the energy of the film according to music
– Be creative, but don’t lose sight of the story you are trying to convey
